Royal Vs. Buttercream
What really is the difference between Royal Icing and Buttercream?
Royal Icing
Royal Icing is made with powder sugar, meringue powder and hot water. This icing is used for making specific designs. Royal icing is also considered less sweet compared to Butter Cream frosting. Royal icing is also created in layers, because it is so thin. The layers can take up to 2 hours to dry before the next layer can be put in. When we are completely done with the design we let them dry for 8 hours minimum to insure the design will not be crushed during transportation.
Buttercream Icing
Butter Cream is the traditional cookie frosting! Many of you will have used it when frosting cookies at Christmas! Butter Cream is made with butter, powder sugar, heavy wiping cream, and vanilla extract. This icing is much thicker and is commonly used on cakes, cupcakes and cookies for making rosettes as well as other 3-D pictures.
